Fiber-core polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers are designed to maintain the highest level of polarization at wavelengths from 488nm to above 1550nm. These fibers can be used in interferometric sensors, modulators, delay lines, spectroscopy, and biomedical applications.
The fiber core uses a "bow-tie" stress-applying section (SAPS) to create a birefringent core. The design of these high-efficiency SAPs yields very high birefringence without excessive stress, allowing the polarization direction to be effectively controlled in fiber optic systems.
"Bowtie" PM fibers
At its core is a region of high-expansion, boron-doped glass that shrinks more than the surrounding silica. Tension induces birefringence (creating two distinct indices of refraction: the higher index parallel and the lower index perpendicular to the applied stress).
FielCype's "bow tie" design is capable of producing more birefringence than any other force-bearing design. That's simply because it's based on two opposing wedges, which is the easiest and most efficient way to apply pressure to a point.
